Skyline from start to R35

The original skylines where four door sedans sold from the fifties. There is one major bond between all skylines and that is power. The original skylines where luxury cars for the wealthy. Throughout the decades the skyline has become more sporty than luxury. Four door versions continue to sell although the coupes are what most enthusiast are interested in.

From the respectable 44 kw of the ALSI-1 model to the 353 kw all new GTR. The engines used in skylines have always been high tech for their time. the early GTR’s s20 I6 two litre engine of 1972 developed 118 kw. It was a four cylinder that was regarded very powerful. The RS-2000 turbo of the early eighties was the start of what we love today with two litre turbo charged engine , although still for cylinders put out 140 kw.

Suspension and chassis continued to improve to cope with the increase in power. Larger and better brakes where used. The styling became more stream lined and the power keept on growing. The six cylinder skylines became more popular in the eighties. The RB engines where a huge step with improved technology larger turbo’s and fuel injection.

Modern Skylies where brash, stylish and powerfull. It wasn’t until the R32 model of the late eighties until the model really showed its colours. With the GTR R32 being the king of skylines. It had 206 kw twin turbos and an awesome four wheel drive line this car was ready to take on porshe and other marks. The gts-t models had an all new two litre six cylinder with twin overhead cams and 32 valves These cars where extremely popular in Japan. They where affordable, well made and reliable.

The R33 was introduced in the early nineties. Nissan keeped many of it’s improvements coming. The R33 still used the hicas four wheels steering, although now electronically controlled. The turbo 2.5 litre six cylinder developing 184 kw was the most powerful gts motor. The Gtr RB26 was now producing 224 kw up 40 kw from the R32.

In the late nineties the R34 was unveiled. This was a restyled car the basic layout and drive train where the same as the R33. The engines where revised with better fuel economy and emission controls. The styling was more sporty looking and quite different than the early models. The R34 Skyline was now regarded as one of the best sports cars in the world. It was packed with technology including dash computer that manages all aspects of the car.

The new GTR is set to launch in Australia next year. This will be the most amazing thing to happen to the skyline since the inception of the R32 GTR. (The R35 GTR isn’t actually called a Skyline) This is the first Skyline supercar. It has made it’s mark for all to see. Look froward to our latest review on The New GTR soon.
